My readers, I hit a low the other day. As I was walking the aisles of Wal-Mart, I began to think about how little money was in my bank account. I had so little money, I wanted to pull a Kanye West and ask people on Twitter to give me money, so I could continue to create beautiful art in this world.

I knew that I had to walk past the fruit and vegetable section of Wal-Mart. There was no way I could afford such luxuries. I gazed lovingly at all the foods and drinks I had taken for granted when I lived at home. Finally, I reached my destination. The lowest of the low: the ramen noodle section.

I bought 50 packets of ramen noodles. It was less than $13.

As I left Wal-Mart feeling weird, it suddenly hit me. Just because I had to eat noodles for the next month, it did not mean my meals had to be boring, and I am probably not the only student at Kent State who became sad just by looking at his or her bank account and was left with no other option than to purchase a ton of ramen noodles.

So for my blog post this week, I am going to provide ways to turn your typical, boring ramen noodle diet into a culinary experience. Now this may not seem like a typical “food of Kent” blog post, but ramen noodles can be found at markets and grocery stores everywhere in Kent. To students that live on campus, you are able to find ramen noodles in both the Prentice and Eastway markets. To students that live off campus, you are able to find them almost anywhere that sells food items.

I hope that after trying these recipes, you Kent get enough ramen noodles.

  1. Add veggies

Obviously, ramen noodles are not the healthiest food on the face of the planet. However, adding some veggies might not only make your dish seem healthier, but it will add some diversity with your dishes. Some veggies I personally loved mixing into ramen noodles include green beans, spinach, cauliflower and watercress. It’s a simple addition, but it could make all the difference.

  1. Make ramen mac ’n’ cheese

What is better than one stereotypical college diet? How about two stereotypical college diets. In only 25 minutes, and with only three other ingredients you can find in your fridge, you can make some delectable and cheesy ramen mac ’n’ cheese.   1. Get crazy and add sauces or condiments

It can be be anything from chili powder to pepper or a little squeeze of lemon. A little sugar, spice or anything nice could make your ramen dish taste like it was made by Chef Gordon Ramsay. Just don’t let it get to your head.


  1. Give your salad a crunch

Too poor to afford croutons? Do not fear. Break pieces of your ramen apart and throw it in with lettuce, carrots and balsamic vinaigrette. You now have a fresh (and somewhat crunchy) salad.

  1. Make Ramen eggs-actly the way you want

What does a turnt egg say? Omelette. OK. I am officially done with the egg yolks (starting now). Anyway, you can add eggs to your ramen in a variety of ways to make your dining experience better. You can give your ramen a stir-fry feel by frying eggs and mixing them into your cooked noodles. You can also simply hard-boil eggs and put them on top of your ramen, or beat eggs in a separate bowl, pour them into the bowl of noodles, and make egg drop soup. No matter what you do, eggs can only make ramen noodles better.

  1. If you don’t want to add veggies, try adding meat

I am a vegetarian, so I do not know what it is like to add meat to a ramen noodle dish. But just like adding veggies, you can add meat to these dishes. Some ideas I have read include adding chicken breast, pork tenderloin or flank steak.

  1. Cook ramen to make a shell for other types of food

That is right. You can cook ramen to be the shell for a chicken pot pie. You can cook it to be the buns for a hamburger. You can cook it to be like lasagna. With these dehydrated noodles, you can really experiment with different tastes, textures and flavors.

I genuinely hope that with this list of ideas, college students will be able to have a different outlook on ramen noodles. They won’t just be for when you’ve hit as low of a point as Kanye; they can be something different, intriguing and, above all else, tasty.
