The Burr is the first student-produced magazine for Kent State University, the city of Kent and anyone looking for strong, journalistic storytelling.
We strive to provide our readers with interesting, humorous and hard-hitting stories that tap into current events, trends and the lives of those who have made a home in Kent.
Maria McGinnis is a senior journalism major and the editor in chief of The Burr. She also has minors in photography, psychology and advertising. Maria is also the web editor for A Magazine and the features/opinion editor for The Kent Stater. In her spare time, she loves to do yoga, play piano, watch Netflix and spend time with family, friends and her dog.
Sara Crawford is a junior journalism student from Lakewood, Ohio, with a minor in public relations. This will be her third semester working for The Burr, and she is the managing editor this semester. In addition to working for The Burr, she is an assigning editor for The Kent Stater. She has always had a passion for writing, starting with short stories about her friends and dog throughout elementary school and advancing from there. Sarah Riedlinger is a senior visual communication design student with a celebrity crush on Ewan McGregor. She, therefore, has no qualms with the “Star Wars” prequel trilogy and will probably sit through “Birds of Prey” just for him. Her favorite typeface is currently Tortellini, and she has been wasting a lot of time playing “Stardew Valley” lately. That is really all you need to know. Elise Jennings is a senior visual communication design major with a minor in marketing. She has a passion for the environment and is always seeking new experiences. In her spare time, you can find her procrastinating her homework and watching a movie. This is Elise’s second semester with The Burr, and she cannot wait to see what is to come.
Sophia Adornetto is a senior advertising and photojournalism student. She has passions for traveling, telling meaningful stories through photography, playing guitar and cooking some awesome meals she finds on Pinterest. Nina Palattella is a senior English major with minors in writing and digital sciences. This is her third semester working for The Burr and her second semester serving as copy desk chief. Nina is the editor in chief of Brainchild, the literary and arts magazine that publishes the work of honors students attending schools in the Mid-East Honors Association Region. She is also the writing intern for the Kent State University Honors College. She has previously served as an editorial intern for New American Press and an editor for Luna Negra. Augusta Battoclette is a senior journalism major and business management minor with a passion for music journalism. Marisa Santillo is a freshman communication studies major with a concentration in applied communication. She is from Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, and this is her second semester working for The Burr as the promotions director. Emily Palombo is a senior English major at Kent State with a minor in professional and technical writing. This is her first semester as a senior editor for The Burr and her second as the managing editor for Uhuru. Emily is a manager tutor at the Writing Commons in the University Library and has been there for three years. She serves as the president of Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honors society, of which she has been a member for four years. Emily has a passion for literature and writing and in her free time can likely be found curled up in her hammock reading a Stephen King novel.

Toye Larry III is a senior advertising major with a minor in interpersonal communication. He is the business promotions assistant, and this is his first semester working for The Burr. When he is not studying and doing work in Franklin Hall, you can find him working at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center. After graduation, he plans to move to work for an advertising agency in a bigger city.
Abigail Bottar is a junior political science major with a concentration in American politics and minors in history and women’s studies. This is her second semester working for The Burr as a copy editor. Abigail is also an intern at WKSU this semester. Lyndsey Brennan is a master’s student in the journalism program at Kent State and serves as a graduate assistant for the Center for Scholastic Journalism, where she helps plan and execute workshops for high school students. Emily Adorno is a sophomore photojournalism major with a fashion media minor. Jason Cohen is a senior public communication major with a minor in psychology. This is his first semester with The Burr and unfortunately his last due to the fact that he will be graduating in May. Lillianna DiFini is a first-year student at Kent State University studying communication studies with a concentration in relational and workplace communication. This semester, she is a blogger for The Burr Magazine and plans to focus much of her content on ways students can better adapt to college. After earning her bachelor’s degree, Lillianna plans to continue her education and earn her master’s degree in education to one day pursue a career in academic advising.

Katie Blazek is a junior visual communication design major with a minor in user experience design. She enjoys expressing creativity and finding the humorous things in life. In addition to working for The Burr and classes, Katie works as a resident assistant and security aide on campus.
Cameron Peters is a junior majoring in visual communication design and minoring in photography. Along with working at The Burr, Cameron works for The Kent Stater designing the pages for the newspaper. After graduation, she hopes to work for a design agency in a big city. Cameron enjoys looking at and making art, listening to music and drinking about 10 cups of coffee a day. She is excited to start her new role at The Burr and gain more experience in the field.
Kelsey Paulus is a sophomore journalism major with a minor in visual communication design. This is her second year working for The Burr, and this year she is working as a designer. She is also involved with TV2’s The Agenda and kentcore (TV2’s newest entertainment show all about local music), and she plans to be involved with Black Squirrel Radio. Paige Brown is currently a sophomore majoring in visual communication design and minoring in advertising. Along with being a designer for The Burr, Paige really enjoys blogging. On top of showcasing her work, she blogs to reach out to other fellow bloggers, readers and advice seekers. Paige hopes to not only market and promote her brand but to sell herself as a person rather than sell her services. Wes Koogle is a third-year visual communication design student with a passion for typography and print design. This is his second semester working for The Burr Magazine as a graphic designer. Dominica “Nicky” Hoover is a freshman studying visual communication design at Kent State. She is from Beaver, Pennsylvania. She studied visual arts and graphic design at Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School, where she also acted as design editor for a nationally recognized literary arts journal, Pulp. As an illustrator, Nicky has been creating and selling stickers of her art for years both in person and on Redbubble (@nickyhoover). Drew Donovan is a sophomore visual communication design major with a minor in digital media production. This is his first semester as an illustrator for The Burr. Drew is a lifelong illustrator and artist, as well as an avid gamer. He dreams of someday working for Adult Swim designing characters or writing scripts. If that does not work, then he will go where the wind takes him.
Maryrose Ceccarelli is a sophomore visual communication design major with a minor in user experience design. This is her first semester working for The Burr. Abby Rickabaugh is a junior studying studio arts and photography. She is a photographer this semester for The Burr and loves telling stories through photographs. She is passionate about international travel and learning about other cultures, and she wants to pursue travel photography after graduating. Her other hobbies include playing the piano, making art, running and hiking.
Anna Lawrence is a sophomore majoring in photography. This is her third semester working for The Burr. She has been practicing photography for five years, and her favorite subjects to photograph are nature, animals and architecture. Anna tries to go home to Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio every weekend to see her two Goldendoodles. In her free time, she loves to watch movies, listen to music and read. Mikey Indriolo is a senior at Kent State majoring in journalism and digital media production. He chose to focus on visual storytelling because he finds it an integral part of his passion for humanity. He wants to visually tell stories that explore the complexity of the human condition. Photography helps him relate to other people and empowers him to play a role in situations he would otherwise never put himself in.
