Zion Christian Cemetery, the first all-black cemetery in Memphis, Tenn., was tucked away in a forest, neglected and overgrown. Forgotten but not gone, people from all over the country have worked to begun to rebuild and renovate this historic land during the past decade. In the spring of 2013, 17 Kent State students joined Christina McVay, an instructor at Kent State and self-admitted cemetery nut, to assist in the restoration effort.

Photographer Jacob Byk asked each student volunteer to find their favorite tombstone for the following portrait series.
