Aesthetics change fast enough for people to grow dizzy trying to keep up. Wait, is lime green in or out?
We don’t really know since Charli XCX waved ‘goodbye forever’ to brat summer.
What do you do when your creator makes you and then throws you away? Some may have thought to ask Dr. Frankenstein, but now we wonder about Charli XCX’s plan.
Now that brat summer is dead, what trend will resurrect in its place?
Brat Summer revolutionized the idea of Hot Girl Summer, already a movement of self love and confidence – making it even more unapologetic and messy.
Slime green, messy hair and chipped nails are just some of the hallmarks of brat summer.
Isabelle McBride, a fashion merchandising major and A Magazine assistant editor weighed in.
“Brat summer was so much more than just a fashion trend – it was an attitude,” McBride Said. “You could be wearing a micro mini skirt and a tube top or a baggy pair of jeans and a T-shirt, and still be channeling that same energy.”
Being brat isn’t dressing brat – it is living up to this lifestyle, while being yourself unapologetically and maybe a bit messy.
“We definitely saw a shift from the clean girl aesthetic into something a little more messy and carefree,” McBride said. “I’m excited to see the bold energy of brat summer transition – I think the messy, eccentric vibe of brat summer will carry in the winter with lots of layering mismatching statement accessories.”
With the release of “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice” coming out just in time for Halloween, there appears to be an eccentric, dark and grungy vibe surrounding pop culture right now.
“I think our taste in music, books and movies will affect [our styles] with classic 90s indie music, dystopian and dark academia novels and I also see new interest in horror movies coming into play,” McBride said.
The international fashion magazine Numéro agrees in the article Burtoncore: How Tim Burton is influencing pop culture and fashion.
“Dark colors, surreal details, Victorian inspiration, whimsical hats, voluminous hairstyles, raven make-up, stripes, baroque jewelry… Tim Burton’s aesthetic, or “Burtoncore,” blends gothic style with humor and fantasy for a wild, eccentric silhouette,” author Violaine Schütz stated.
If we are giving a name to the future aesthetic, McBride thinks it’s unfiltered grunge. “It captures the come-as-you-are elements:”
So prepare for dark, messy, unapologetic and unfiltered grunge.
