Halloweekend is one of the busiest weekends of the year across most college campuses. This is a weekend full of parties and plenty of on-campus events, which raises another question,”What do I wear?”
Costumes are a central aspect of Halloweekend and some students even wear three costumes, one for each night (Thursday through Saturday) and sometimes even for the weekend before. It is definitely a competition between students to determine whose costume will be the most creative, unique and fashionable.
Some students at Kent State shared their Halloween costume predictions and trends, as well as what they are planning to be for this year’s Halloweekend.
Ella Reese, a sophomore journalism student, says she hopes to see more “final girl” costumes. A final girl is a horror movie trope that describes the last girl standing after the killer has successfully murdered every other member of the group. Examples of final girls would include Sidney Presscott from “Scream,” Laurie Strode from “Halloween” and Wendy Torrance in “The Shining.”
Many college students enjoy collaborating with their friends and wearing a group costume. “I would like to see a real, good group of Bratz [dolls] or maybe Monster High, that’s what I want to see,” says Gianna Kae, a freshman fashion merchandising major.
Bratz and Monster High dolls’ wide collection provides students the opportunity to express their personality through their costumes, because there are dolls that can suit many personalities.
Bratz dolls can help anyone looking to dress in Y2K fashion, with low-rise jeans, fur and cabbie hats. Monster High provides an opportunity to experiment through color, unique patterns and monstrous makeup to fit the doll.
Most costumes for Halloween look great, but aren’t some of them overdone? “I don’t want to see any boring couples costumes, I’m sick of it. Coming from someone who has a boyfriend,” said Reece.
Brooklyn Kendrick, a sophomore fashion merchandising major, shares how she has seen too many deer in a headlights couple’s costumes. “We need to mix it up,” said Kendrick.
You may be wondering, what are some of the costumes planned by Kent State students? Kendrick shares, “I want to be a clown, but I want to be my subconscious,” she said, “I don’t know who she is yet, but when I meet her, I’ll do my makeup and then that’s my clown.”
Lapinsky shares how she plans on being Miss Hannigan from Annie. “I’m really excited because I’m a redhead,” said Lapinsky.
Caprese Nicholson, a freshman fashion design major, shares how she’s taking her costume out of this world, “I’m really excited to paint my face blue because I’m gonna be a blue alien.” Nicholson said.
Students recommend apps like Pinterest and Cosmos for Halloween costume inspiration. Other forms of media they recommend include old magazines and even anime. They also suggested that individuals should try and come up with their costume using their own creativity.
“Just tap into your mind. Even if people don’t know who you are, it’s fun to see what people say about it.” Kendrick said.
