Hulu Originals

Hulu is one of the world’s largest, most well-known streaming services. It was founded in 2007 by Jason Kilar and Beth Comstock. Since then, Hulu has produced countless shows of its own.

Here are some of my top recommendations for Hulu original shows to watch:

The Handmaid’s Tale (2017– )

This dystopian series is based on the 1985 novel of the same name written by Margaret Atwood. The series takes place in a world where fertility rates plummet and a totalitarian theonomic government which is a Christian form of government that has total control over the lives of its citizens takes rule after a civil war in the United States. Infertility led to the enslavement of fertile women which they call handmaids. The show follows a handmaid, June Osborn, and her fight for survival in this dystopian society.

If I were to recommend one show on Hulu to watch, it would be this show. It is by far one of the best shows I’ve ever watched. It can be hard to watch at times due to the sensitive topics covered on the show.

Pam and Tommy (2022)

This series starring Lily James and Sebastian Stan is based on Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee’s relationship in the 1990s and their leaked stolen sex tape. Though Anderson and Tommy never found out who actually stole their tape in real life, the series creates an interesting story around the true fact that the tape was found in a safe that was stolen from Anderson and Tommy’s house.

The way the series tells the story of Pam and Tommy’s relationship and what they had to go through after the tape was leaked was excellent. The series really shows the struggles that happened behind the scenes and how it affected their relationship.

Normal People (2020)

This series is based on the 2018 novel of the same name written by Sally Rooney. The series follows high school students Marianne and Connell who come from the same town in Ireland but have different backgrounds. It goes through the ups and downs of their romantic lives and growing up.

This series as well as the book is so real and raw. They show awkward silences and conversations and they make it easy to relate to the characters.

The Dropout (2022)

This series starring Amanda Seyfried is based on the true story of Elizabeth Holmes who created a billion-dollar health technology company called Theranos. Stanford dropout Holmes fooled investors, doctors, and journalists with her claims that she created a device that could diagnose diseases with a single drop of blood which was not the case and she was indicted for fraud.

This show is so good not only because the story is crazy but also because Seyfried’s acting is incredible.

Only Murders in the Building (2021– )

This mystery comedy series starring Steve Martin, Selena Gomez, and Martin Short follows three strangers who live in the same apartment building on the Upper West Side in NYC and share an obsession with true crime. When a murder happens in their building, it brings them together to investigate the truth.

This show is funny and relatable at times and it’s a perfect mix of comedy and mystery.

Nine Perfect Strangers (2021)

This mystery thriller series is based on a book of the same name written by Liane Moriarty. It takes place at a health and wellness resort that promises to transform and heal guests who come for their wellness retreats. The resort is not what it seems and guests learn each others secrets. The host of the resort has alternative and questionable methods to “transform and heal” her guests.

This series is so engaging and nail-biting. The acting is incredible with actors including Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy, Luke Evans and Bobby Cannavale.

The Kardashians (2022– )

This list would be incomplete without The Kardashians. Following their former 20-season show on E! Network, the family moved to Hulu to create a new look and vibe to the show. The reality series shows the lives of the Kardashians and Jenners behind what everyone sees on social media like struggles with infertility, relationships, mental health and more.

The Kardashians are controversial and not everyone likes them but it is entertaining and a good show to put on when you’re not sure what to watch plus you get a better understanding of who this family is aside from social media.
