The Joy of Juicing

Hello again, friend. I’m so glad you’re here. In this last post of the semester during my time here at The Burr, I want to talk to you about the joy of juicing.

Juicing is one of my favorite ways to incorporate fruits and vegetables into my diet –– it’s the perfect way to get all the vitamins, minerals, nutrients and antioxidants from fresh produce but in liquid form.

Whether it be drinking the juice on its own or using it as the liquid in a smoothie, juicing allows you to pack in those necessary servings of vegetables and fruits per day without consuming an excessive volume of food in order to do so.

Juicing allows you to combine multiple different fruits and vegetables in one drink for a hardcore health tonic with an abundance of nutritous benefits depending on what specific produce you use.

Juicing is a fairly simple and straightforward process, the hardest part being acquiring a juicer in the first place. I own the ACME Supreme Juicerator Model 6001 along with the Citrus Juicer attachment, which I find very useful as I enjoy making fresh orange juice and using citrus in my juice mixtures.

Juicers can run pretty expensive, but this one has been in my family for years and has held up very well. With proper cleaning and cautious care, these beasts are pretty indestructible.

You can juice nearly any fruit or vegetable and have a lot of fun coming up with your own tasty combinations packed full of whatever nutrients you’d like. As for me, I like to keep it simple with a basic celery-orange combo.

I tend to make this juice in large batches at the beginning of the week when I have a small chunk of time to do so –– the clean up process is a tad brutal –– and store it in a large mason jar in my fridge. I’ll drink this juice on its own in the mornings on an empty stomach or use it in smoothies throughout the week. Fresh juice makes the best liquid for smoothies!

Celery juice has a lot of amazing benefits. Oranges, of course, are jam-packed with vitamin C … not to mention that the taste of the two together is such a subtle sweet haven of freshness. It’s to live for.

I’ve found that one bundle of celery and a few navel oranges makes an adequate amount of juice for the week with just the right flavor. The taste is earthy and surprisingly buttery with a subtle tang from the oranges. In smoothies, you wouldn’t believe what you’re drinking is all-natural sugar! So … here she is!

Fresh Celery-Orange Juice

Servings: 6-8 servings

Time: 20 minutes

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients:

1 bundle of celery

6-8 navel oranges

Instructions:

  1. Wash the celery, remove the leaves and cut the oranges in half.
  2. Juice the oranges with a citrus attachment and the celery using the conventional attachment (or however your personal juicer works).
  3. Store in a large, tightly sealed jar and drink first thing in the morning or in smoothies throughout the week. Enjoy!

Juicing is such an effective and tasty way to consume fresh produce and enjoy it while doing so. The combinations of flavor profiles are endless and having even just a few ounces a day can increase your well-being in so many ways.

I hope if you don’t own a juicer already, you’re at least a little more inclined to buy one, and if you already own one, you bust it out and get juicing because man, oh man, is fresh juice a joyous thing.

That’s all for today and this semester, friend. It’s been an honor being able to share just a few food-filled words with you, and I hope somewhere along this journey I was able to make you and your belly smile.

Thanks for following along with me. I hope we talk again soon.
