Hello all! I have some new music for you. Like always, I have more of your new favorite artists right here. In this edition of Speakeasy Sounds, we’ll be looking at some Latinx indie all the way to some underground hip hop. I hope you are all staying safe and practicing social distancing, we’re going to get through this!
With that said, let’s jump into it!
Green Jellÿ (grunge punk)
We’re going to start off strong and loud with this one.
Off the bat, Green Jellÿ was originally named Green Jell-O. Due to legal issues with the dessert “Jell-O,” they use the “ÿ.” I would suggest this band if you’re into bands like Oysterhead, Tool or Gwar.
Green Jellÿ offers you an avant-garde punk-like sound with satirical lyrics. Their most famous song would be their rendition of the folk-lore tale of the three little pigs. This band is for the headbangers with a strong sense of humor.
While you’re jamming out to Green Jellÿ, check out their song “Obey the Cow God,” on their first album “Triple Live Möther Gööse At Budokan.”
Quelle Chris (rap/hip hop)
This artist is still fairly underground, so maybe we can change that!
Quelle Chris gives us solid bars with an OG sound with new flavor. If you’re listening to artists like Kendrick Lamar, Cypress Hill or De La Soul, you’ve got to get hip to Quelle Chris. You can expect some skit songs and interludes similar to what you’ll hear on Wu-Tang Clan’s “Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)” or N.W.A’s “Straight Outta Compton.”
When you’re checking Quelle Chris out, you’ve got to listen to “Mind Ya Bidness” on his latest album “Guns.” Quelle Chris has been putting out solid albums since 2013 so don’t be afraid to go back and catch up.
Chicano Batman (Latinx indie)
This Spanglish band delivers trancey reverb, bright keys and a multilingual message. You’ll love this band if you’re already into Devendra Banhart, Sugar Candy Mountain or The Growlers. Even if you don’t understand some of the lyrics, the music will help translate.
If you don’t already listen to Latinx indie, then you’re obliged to give it a try. There are many great Latinx artists that have so much to offer in their own way. Immerse yourself in some culture with these great artists.
“Magma” is a great song choice when you’re listening to their album “Cycles of Existential Rhyme.” You can start the album from any place and still get the same sunny-day vibes.
Deer Tick (alternative)
Deer Tick offers a distinct voice, swaying guitar and a different take on American music.
I would consider this band to be more alternative Americana, because they give an authentic Americana feel with a distorted guitar. Deer Tick does have their slower songs which are definitely worth a listen.
Each album by Deer Tick is unique in its own way. Each album has edgy songs accompanied with acoustic serenades.
We will be looking at their 2007 album “War Elephant.” The album as a whole is great, although you don’t have to listen to it from start to finish. On this album make sure to check out “Art Isn’t Real (City of Sin).”
That will about do it for this edition of Speakeasy Sounds! I hope you love your new favorite music, and I’ll be busy looking for more. I know we’re all mentally drained from this quarantine, but we will make it out on the other side if we keep at it! See you there.
